You must have heard about the Negroni cocktail and maybe even tried it, as it is a popular aperitif throughout the world. However you are probably not aware of the fact that Negroni, its inventor, was a Florentine by birth. He was not a barman, but a drinker, and, perhaps understandably, drinkers are responsible for having invented most of the more classic cocktails. The Americano, the most fashionable drink in Florence in the 1920’s, was one of the surviving traces of European pro-American feelings after World War I.
An Americano is half sweet vermouth and half Campari with a generous splash of soda. Fashionable Count Camillo Negroni would meet his friends every day at the Giacosa bar in fashionable Via Tornabuoni and order an Americano - but with a difference - a splash of gin replaced the soda. Other people soon copied him and began to order their Americanos “the Negroni way” giving life to an new trend...
