Another trip that is a close second in popularity to Viareggio, but also proclaimed a must see by anyone who has been, is the Cinque Terre. Also on the Ligurian Coast, Cinque Terre is a series of five isolated villages and a favorite of hikers and beach goers alike. It can be reached by train but not directly. There are buses and ferries that run between the different vlllages although most people choose to hike it. Two long stretches of beach near the first village called Monterosso are the most popular, but other beaches can be found, though not necessarily sand. Snorkeling is also possible in various parts of the Cinque Terre due to the deep waters rich in aquatic life. If you are adventurous, try the local specialty, anchovies!
