“ Che cosa significa?” I asked the girl standing next to me. Laughing and as politely as she could, she tried to explain the swear words that were being screamed at the Roman spectators. Then she turned to her friend and told him how she was polluting my mind. We all proceeded to laugh.
Welcome to the
Florentina-
Roma football match where if someone had died in the crowd, it would have been an understandable sacrifice. Never had I seen such spirit and ferocity as I saw last Wednesday night at the
stadium. The strength of the insults being screamed seemed, to me, strong enough to break through the plexi-glass barriers seperating the Romans from the Florentines. But the real need for that barrier was made crystal clear to me the second Rome scored the first goal of the match. The water bottles being tossed by either side were definetly another much appreciated touch.
The intense Florentine unity and spirit was truly amazing to see and worth every minute of standing in the rain. Wednesday the 26th of September was an extremely memorable evening, during at which time I was able to expand my
Italian street vocabulary admirably.
