If you like playing, or simply watching golf, you will find it absolutely fascinating
to follow this original match, perhaps the most unusual in the world.
The game in fact consists in hitting the ball from a tee on the Ponte Vecchio
in order to try and centre the pin on the three greens (floating platforms
or rafts) that are anchored in the middle of the river at a distance of
70, 120, 180 metres from the bridge. Some of the finest professional and
amateur golf players in the world take part in these tournaments, divided
into several categories and entitled the Ponte Vecchio Challenge.
Spectators can also sign on just to try putting towards the greens for themselves.
The idea is in fact to encourage people to take up golfing as a sport.
The winner (among the pros) not only bags a prize in cash, but also qualifies
for the Italian championships. If you want to try your hand at playing, you can
either sign on beforehand on-line - www.pontevecchiochallenge.it -, phone
free call number 800.385078 or enroll directly on the bridge on the day of
the match. The inscription charges are used for charity.
