The first monographic exhibition dedicated to the painter
Francesco Furini (Florence, 1603-1646), the main protagonist of Florentine figurative culture in the 17th century. the exhibition illustrates the various stages in the artistic career of one of the most significant painters of 17th century italy, offering a selected collection of works (about 40 paintings and 20 drawings) chosen for their high quality and their consolidated success with the critics. the show is hosted inside the
Silver Museum at the
Pitti Palace, where, on a commission from
Ferdinando II de’ Medici, Furini also frescoed an entire wall of the main Salon with two large lunettes describing the
Platonic Academy at careggi and the Allegory of the death of
Lorenzo the Magnificent. the preparatory drawings, also on display, can be considered some of the finest examples of
17th century , . ingrained with a sensual melancholy that was both nocturnal and hedonistic, Furini’s paintings can be placed in a new cultural space compared to the standards of classical beauty proposed by the Bolognese and Roman
schools and the Baroque sumptuousness of the contemporary Florentine painting. the exhibition proposes a reunification and a comparative study of a corpus of art works that have been scattered for centuries. it is therefore a chance to redeem the most characteristic tendencies of 17th century Florentine painting, little known, up until now, to the public in general.
